Stephen Hughes MSc FCILT, CMIOSH, CIWFM, PISEP

"I've got over twenty five years' management experience in the rail industry, taking my first role with Railtrack back in 1996, shortly after the privatisation of British Rail. I have worked directly for organisations including Transport for London, Balfour Beatty, Deutsche Bahn, Arriva Trains, Amey Rail, Colas Rail and Bombardier.
 
I've had exposure across both passenger operations and projects. Fleet Safety Manager for the largest Train Operating Company in the UK and Professional Head of Railway Safety for a Network Rail Tier 1 Principal Contractor - just two roles I've undertaken in my career to date. I also spent four years working as a Health & Safety Manager on site for the HS2 project.

My qualifications and experience include health and safety management, environmental/sustainability management and facilities management. I'm trained as a Kelvin TOPSET Senior Investigator and have investigated a wide range of accidents and incidents over the years including managing the interface with the HSE or HMRI. I hold a Highfield Level 3 award for delivering training.
 
I spent over ten years as a Special Constable with the British Transport Police which gave me additional valuable skills and experience of the rail industry. I'm currently in 2025 undertaking training to re-join another force as a Special Constable.

A personal interest area of mine is mental health awareness and wellbeing in the workplace and I'm a big believer in ensuring that colleagues are fully supported in times of need.
 
I work with a select group of highly experienced rail industry based consultants and I'm able to bring in additional resources and work with such specialists as assignments and delivery requirements demand."
